Tom Quilter’s selection in the New South Wales Country Bush Blues probably tipped the scales in his favour for the honour of being Dubbo Cricketer of the Year.

The Herb Whitney Memorial Shield has been won by some fabulous cricketers over many years and Quilter’s performances during the past season were worthy of the award.
The annual presentation dinner was held at the Dubbo RSL Club on Friday night.
Quilter said he was satisfied with his performances with both the ball during the past six months.
“Undoubtedly making the Country side for the Australian Championships was the highlight for me,” he said.
“It was a great honour to be in that company and I would certainly be doing my best to keep my name up there for selection again next season.
“The only disappointing aspect of the season was Souths missing out on the Whitney Cup premiership. We gave it or best shot but Colts were too good in the grand final.
“But to win the Dubbo association’s major award is an honour.”
The Souths bowling all rounder boosted his chances for the top award by claiming both the bowling awards.
He took 30 wickets to top the aggregates in front of Josh Smith (Colts) with 28 and CYMS quick Ben Strachan (24).
Quilter (16.63 runs per wicket) also finished in front of Smith (18.10) and Souths team-mate Tim Berry (20.36) for the bowling average award.
Batting in a strong Souths outfit limited Quilter’s time at the crease but when he was needed he dug in and really valued his wicket.
That was obvious in the final series.
While Quilter was a popular winner of the Herb Whitney Memorial Shield, RSL-Colts all rounder Brad Cox would easily have been second choice.
He dominated the batting crease scoring 612 runs to finish in front of Jason Green from Macquarie with 577 and John Colwell (Souths) 566.
Cox also claimed the best and fairest award winning with 14 points, narrowly from Berry (13) and Colwell (12).
Congratulations also to Rugby skipper Nathan Munro who won the batting average with 491 runs at 61.37.
