Dubbo dwellers have highlighted the strong potential for the site with visions of a big indoor sports complex, a new shopping mall, a theme park and more.

The suggestions come as the community eagerly awaits the announcement of who the secret buyer is and what is planned for the landmark’s future.

The Daily Liberal reported at the weekend that the site was in the process of being bought, but the whole proceedings were shrouded in mystery.

Even though the site has endured years of failing plans, Dubbo people still believe it could be turned into something great.

“I think it should be stripped down and turned into a big park or indoor sport

stadium,” Brian Walters said yesterday.

The land was big enough to give the city something of that calibre, he said.

Matthew Walsh backed the idea of an indoor sports

stadium and said it would attract people to the city.

Lillian Walsh suggested a big shopping mall giving Dubbo more variety, including fashion shops for young people.

Megan Jones thought a cultural area would do well there.

“Another theatre or a few more restaurants would be good,” she said.

“I’d like to see something done with it, it’s a big waste of space at the moment.”

Chris Walker thought big, suggesting a theme park

with “rollercoasters and the lot”.

“We need more places to go with friends and have fun,” he said.

Developer John Kosseris bought the former RAAF base for $4.65 million in 2003, but development applications made to Dubbo City Council failed one by one over the years.

Receivers KordaMentha have had the property since February 2009 after Mr Kosseris’ company SPV 2 went into receivership.
