This meeting will not only draw the curtain closed on another fantastic season, but it will be highlighted with memories of the late Ron Rich who was a long time supporter of the Dubbo club and harness racing in general with his trade mark Waikare pacers before his death in 1999.
Wife Margaret, sons Mark, Peter, David and Michael and their families and friends will be trackside to relive some of the great trotting memories and witness the running of the time honoured Ron Rich Memorial which is race three at 6.35pm.
Most of the Waikare pacers were trained initially by Garry Edwards in Dubbo but also with Henry McDermott in Victoria.
The Rich family owned stock had success at all levels with Waikare Gold upholding the name by running third in the 2002 Inter Dominion Trotting Championship held at Harold Park.
Ron’s former accountancy firm Christies Public Accountants is also a sponsor tomorrow night, as is Regional Mortgage Professionals and Aspect Property Consultants.
Another highlight of the season ending meeting will be the battle for season award honours with three categories still up for grabs.
This will pave the way for some very exciting races with five points on the line for any first placings, three points for second and one for third.
Garth Hoy has the leading trainer and local trainer awards wrapped up while son Nathan Hoy has a stranglehold on the local driver award. Bathurst’s John O’Shea will be the leading under-23 driver.
Up for decision tonight is the leading driver award with Nathan Hoy (68) and John O’Shea (64) set to pullout all strings to push their claim for honours.
Hoy only has two drives tomorrow night including last start winner Lulu Melody (race 1) and last start placegetter Hare Indagrass (race 3) who are both in form and capable of finishing in the first three placings.
O’Shea has four strong drives including last start Dubbo winners Champagne Jasper (race 1) and Peace of Merv (5) along with last start Dubbo placegetters Imposing Fella (2) and Eenie Meenie (3) which may see him finish with a flurry of points.
Dubbo’s outstanding mare of the season, the Michael Pay trained Foolish Kiss in race has 36 and only has one danger to claiming the horse of the year title.
That challenge comes from the Tom Copelin trained Karloo Stature (32) who will be returning from spell in race 3.
The most competitive award of the season is the two and three-year-old award which looks like coming down to the result of the main race on the program which is the Ron Rich Memorial.
Here we have Intemperate, Dancing Joroco on 10 points, Eenie Meenie (7) and Hare Indagrass (6) who will be charging to the finishing line trying to finish in the placings.
That’s right, placings because these title contenders will face stiff opposition to secure a win with the likes of classy pacers Stormy Warrior and Intimate Moments hard to beat.
But while these four contenders do battle for minor spoils, Ken Beauty (9 points) will go around in race 6 gate two could be a chance to claim the title in the last race of the season.
n Presentation awards night will be held on Saturday, September 5 from 6.30pm at the West Dubbo Bowling Club. Cost is $30 per person for a two-course meal and tickets can be purchased at tomorrow night’s meeting or by contacting Marge Bradley on 6884 8606.
