Toomey was chosen as one of just six students from the academy to have their journey filmed and as the only Aboriginal student in his class he is incredibly motivated.
Anthony first applied for the police academy after Year 12 but didn’t get in and said he really wanted to be a cop to rise above the stereotypical opinions some have of Aboriginal people.
He said he was out to prove he can make something of himself.
“I’m the only Aboriginal, I’ve got to show them up,” he said.
Last year Penrith Rugby League Club offered him a football contract, which he started but then his grandmother became sick.
He took time off to help her recover and when the football club gave him time off to think about what he wanted to do, he decided to try the police force.
Anthony brings with him to the academy amazing athleticism - he breaks all the physical testing records and isn’t shy about telling anyone who will listen.
He finds it easy to make friends at the academy but struggles with discipline.
In the show Anthony is committed to the course and is doing well until Week 10 when he loses his licence for failing to display P-plates and can’t return until he has his licence back.
It’s a major setback but he is eager to get back to the academy and see his course through.
The Recruits appears on Channel Ten at 8pm on Mondays.
