They have been involved in the industry for many years as judges and competitors and believe it is a life-changing sport.
“If you want to change your life and if you find weights stimulating, then you should take it to the next step, give yourself a reason for training,” Mr Russell said.
The duo have taken their body building expertise around the world.
“We have been to Greece, the USA, New Zealand and the South Pacific,” Mr Russell said. “Back then judges really had to judge well in order to qualify for the top events - today the training is a lot better.”
While competition remains tough it is not all about having the most finely tuned abs.
“ We see the greatest changes in people, it is a great sport and it is good for your health,” Mrs Russell said. “We have different divisions such as sports model, for those who genuinely like to keep fit, so there is something for everyone.”
This year’s competition will see 35 competitors from around the country including four from Dubbo, Newcastle and as far away as the Northern Territory.
Like every sport it comes with a cost, but Mr Russell says it’s worth it for self-gratification.
“It is very much a gratification sport, people take pride in their image, so they don’t mind spending a little money on their clothing and training,” he said.
The 22nd Dubbo International Body Building Championships will be held this Saturday at the Dubbo RSL auditorium from 6pm.
Tickets are $25 for spectators and $35 for competitors.
“None of our competitors have ever complained about our competitions, we believe that is the best pat on the back,” Mr Russell said.
