The man in his mid-20s, believed to be from Sydney, was eventually taken to Dubbo Base Hospital.
Police are now investigating the incident, and are also looking into claims that a knife was involved.
Four police officers and one detective were called to the train station about 2.40pm yesterday, and could be seen charging down the station platform.
Passengers were urged not to board the train via messages over the railway station’s loud speaker.
Hundreds of stunned passengers, unaware of what was happening, watched officers and the detective quickly head to both ends of the train. Passengers were asked not to disembark the train until police had the situation in hand.
Three disembarking buses full of passengers at the station added to the melee of people and luggage.
Railway station staff were on hand to hold people back from entering the train or getting too close to the scene.
Police quickly took the man off the train and successfully removed him for questioning.
Police later said he was taken to Dubbo Base Hospital to be examined by a doctor under the Mental Health Act and the train station resumed regular duties.
Police were alerted by the staff on the XPT as it was coming into the station that the man was behaving suspiciously.
Police are now investigating the incident after an allegation that a knife was involved.
