Unfortunately the weather was not kind, with strong winds and winter-like temperatures, making the 23-degree water temperature actually the warmest place to be when the race started.
The event saw 31 teams and more than 80 competitors compete for overall honours. There were numerous first-timers on the day and it is hoped they will take on a full triathlon in coming races.
Competitors completed a course of a 500m swim, 18km bike and 4km run; or a shortened course of 500m swim, 9km bike and 2km run. Teams could consist of two or three members with watches not allowed.
On the day the winning team was the team judged to be closest to their nominated time.
In the end it was Team Guru consisting of Bronwyn Powell (swim), David Heap (bike) and Tim Bolton (run) who took out the event with their time of 64 minutes, only 21 seconds away from their nominated time.
Other strong efforts came from Happers Revenge (Rob Duffy, Michael Martin Junior, Chris Martin) 92 seconds from their nominated time; AJK (Adam Watt, John Bartholonhew, Kelly Phelan) 88 seconds; Sunday Madness (R Duffy, Tim Furney, Linden Kotzur) 90 seconds; Morrison Eye Care 1 (Rodney Morrison, Joshua Williams and Sallyanne Morrison) 120 seconds.
In the short course event Pete’s Gales (Peter Christie, Deb Christie and Allison Harris) were closest to their nominated time while Ice Age (Jane North, Bill North and Shelly Ryan) were next.
It was particularly pleasing to see Phil Priest and Bob Hogno take part in the ride as part of teams. Both were long-time friends of Michael Martin. Unfortunately luck was not kind to either of them as they battled two flat tyres.
Their wives Annette and Marlene were not sympathetic though claiming this cost them their chances of taking home first place.
Michael Martin’s wife Chris and son Michael Junior and also took part on the day and presented the trophy to the team closest to their nominated time.
Overall the day was a huge success given the terrible conditions. More than $300 was raised for the Canteen Charity (Kids with Cancer).
The next Dubbo Triathlon Club race will be held on Sunday, December 21 at the Ollie Robbins Oval with a 7.30am registration for an 8am start. For further information contact Craig May 6881 6874.
