He believes the 15-year sentence handed down to convicted killer Admad Fahrul Rosi “stinks”.
Ms Murphy was stabbed 37 times during a frenzied attack at her Bali villa in February.
Rosi escaped a life sentence by telling the court he did not intend to murder.
Judges found Rosi panicked when Ms Murphy started screaming and he stabbed her repeatedly until she lay quiet. Prosecutors are considering whether to appeal the verdict while Rosi’s lawyers are contemplating an appeal against the severity of the sentence.
Gary Murphy expected a “fairer” sentence and
can not understand Rosi received less than Schapelle Corby who
is serving 20 years for importing cannabis
into Bali.
“It’s very disappointing and I’m feeling pretty numb,’’ Mr Murphy said.
“The sentencing was never about revenge - we just wanted justice for Heidi.
“Anyway you look at it, the court’s decision is pretty weak. How can Rosi say he didn’t mean to kill Heidi? He stabbed her viciously and repeatedly, stole what he wanted, rolled her body in a blanket and stabbed some more to ensure she was really dead.
“It’s terrible to think that the Indonesian legal
system valued Heidi’s life so cheaply.’’
In delivering the verdict, Judge Daniel Palinttin described the violence committed by Rosi as sadistic and inhumane.
The judge found that Ms Murphy fought with Rosi after the first stab to her abdomen and that Rosi then pushed her into the wall and stabbed her many times.
Rosi fled to Java with accomplice Nuryanto Bin Sudar who is yet to be sentenced. Rosi pawned a laptop and mobile phones he had stolen from the villa and used the money to buy engagement rings for himself and his girlfriend.
