Riding ‘Petty Harmony’, a 9-year-old warmblood/
thoroughbred-cross mare by ‘Victorieux’, Ms Pye was successful at her first competition with the horse by winning both preparatory tests at the club championships held at Dubbo Showground.
The preliminary championship went to Sandy Croghan of Dubbo on her warmblood gelding ‘Des’. Croghan and her husband Gary are proprietors of the Western Plains Riding Centre.
Yasmin Crockett travelled from Mudgee with ‘Dresden Riverdance’ to be named as winner of the novice championship.
Well-known local rider and instructor Gillian Hill saddled up ‘Bridgford Speculator’, her home-bred 10-year-old Australian warmblood gelding by ‘Salute’ to win both elementary tests and championship rug, while her daughter Diana Tremain form Baldry kept the family flag flying by being named as the medium champion for 2008.
Junior champions were Grace Wolter of Dubbo riding ‘Charms’ (preparatory) and Nyngan rider Georgie Winterflood on ‘Laverstock Mig’ (preliminary).
Judges for the day were ‘Winks’ Armstrong of Cassilis and Fiona Hemmy of Rylstone.
Orana Equestrian Club president Suzie Wilson was very happy to see the club championships return after last year’s EI outbreak put a stop to all horse-related activites, and praised the riders and helpers for contributing to the event’s success.
“I think the day has run very smoothly. We haven’t had any hiccups and all the horses have been well behaved’” she said. “We’ve had a large number of spectators come and we’ve been lucky enough to have good weather, with the wind dropping and a very sunny, calm afternoon. The smooth running of the day has been due to members who have given their time to help.”
