Stephen Gersbach was on his way back to Orange when the crash occurred just before midnight.
Wellington police and emergency services went to the scene, after a nearby resident heard a crash and called police.
Mr Gersbach was involved with the junior grades of Emus Rugby Union Club where his children played Walla Rugby.
On Saturday Emus marked Mr Gersbach’s passing with a minute’s silence before the under-15s and first grade games.
President of the club Phil McGarity said the death of Mr Gersbach was a tragedy which had sent ripples throughout all the grades of the club.
“We will look at providing support for his family where we can, and our sympathy goes out to them at this time of tragedy,” he said.
