Members are confident that when the work is completed they can market their track to the race-starved sprint car teams that each week vie for race time at Parramatta Speedway.

“The bottom line is that there are 80 drivers who want to race at Parramatta each week and only 30 get a start,” Dubbo club spokesman John Batten said.

“There lies our plan to get the Morris Park track up to standard and then invite the Sydney drivers to come out here.

“If you love speedway racing, then you love the sprint cars which are throwing out enormous power from 370 and 410 V8 motors.

“They are the cars that draw the crowds and it would be enormous if we could make it happen here in Dubbo.”

Batten likes the idea that would see the track have a seven per cent banking all round and change it’s shape to an oval track.

“On the back of talks between the club executive and members we believe we can get the job done,” Batten said.

“We have a member in Darren Anning who has earth moving equipment and he’s already started on the work. There are also other members willing to chip in and by doing it that way we can be confident that costs will be kept to a minimum.”

Batten said all being well, preliminary work would be completed by Christmas.

“Obviously this track work will restrict our summer racing season at Morris Park but it needed to be done now, rather than later,” he said.

“After the work is done we will get into our full racing season which will again feature all the popular forms of racing including super sedans.”

Batten also stressed that sprint car racing for Dubbo would also mean dollars in the tills for local accommodation, food and fuel people.

“Some of the sprint car team set-ups are huge, some have a team of 20 people, some have just a couple,” he said. “But they would be staying overnight at our motels, they need to eat and drink and have to fill up their rigs before setting off on their way back home.

“And of course when we have the cars the fans will come from near and far to see them in action - again more tourism dollars for Dubbo.

“But the first thing we have to do is get the track work done and then see what happens.”

Graham Walton will head a new executive at Dubbo City Speedway, an organisation that shares the Morris Park complex with Dubbo Dirt Bikes.

Other members of the executive are vice-presidents Brett Burton and John Lucan, secretary Linda Clarke and treasurer Ian Boland.
