Families keep alive memories of stars

Memories of former rugby league champions, Jai Dunn and Lex Richards, will be remembered with trophies donated by their families for the Dubbo primary schools competition. Dubbo Primary Schools Sports Association (DPSSA) president Peter Aird, took possession of the trophies from Jai's brother Robbie Dunn and Geoff Richards, the father of Lex. Tragically both young men had their lives cut short, Lex through cancer in 2002 and Jai in a motor vehicle accident in 1996 returning back to Penrith where he was destined to be one of the super stars in the Panthers club. "Having these new trophies for competition is something that the Dubbo PSSA is very proud of," Peter Aird said. "These two young men were products of the primary schools system and in particular sport in Dubbo, but sadly they lost their lives prematurely," Aird said. "Having these trophies donated in their honour is wonderful for primary schools rugby league and I feel certain that the teams that win them at the end of our winter competition will feel very proud. "There is a perpetual trophy for the winning schools and the families have sought fit to donate a special award each year to the player of the grand final - an award judged by the players in the winning team." The two trophies will be played for in two divisions, juniors (years 3-4) and seniors (years 5-6). Arguably, Jai Dunn would have made it in rugby league. He attended St Pius Catholic School in West Dubbo and came from a rugby league 'family,' being the young brother of Robbie, Michael, George, Gerard, Gary and John Dunn. He played his junior league with firstly Police Youth Club and St John's and was given game time with CYMS under 18s when he was aged just 15 and 16. He finished with his schooling in the Penrith district and played Commonwealth Bank Cup as well as Jersey Flegg for Penrith Panthers. Before his untimely death, he was home at Dubbo to help out with a rugby league camp. On his way back to Sydney he was involved in a motor vehicle accident and died tragically. Lex Richards was a product of the Police Youth Club in his young years and turned out for CYMS under 18s and Macquarie first grade. He then moved to Hillston and played Group 17 for two years. His death because of cancer four years ago in September devastated his family. Hopefully these two rugby league trophies will be a reminded of the valuable contributions both made to the game in Dubbo.
