Three women and one man were arrested yesterday after leading police on a four-and-a-half hour cat and mouse chase through and around the Goonoo State Forest and the Dubbo region. Pursuit of the early model grey Daihatsu Charade began when the male driver failed to stop for a routine random breath test in Fitzroy street at around 10.30am and sped off after running a stop sign. Police pursued the vehicle to Brocklehurst and along the Mendooran Road but terminated the high-speed chase when road and radio conditions in the state forest made continuing hazardous. During the lengthy chase, the occupants of the car threw missiles at pursuing police vehicles including cans, bottles and a screwdriver with police preparing to deploy road spikes in an effort to stop the chase. Police continued to search for the vehicle and its occupants throughout the day but despite a number of reported sightings, were unable to locate the vehicle or its occupants. The pursuit resumed in earnest at 2.45pm following information from a motorist who reported seeing the vehicle driving towards Dubbo along the Mogriguy Road. The dangerous joy-ride ended for the four when their vehicle, which sustained minor damage during the pursuit through the forest, overheated at about 3pm yesterday afternoon on the Coolbaggie Road about 25 kilometres from Dubbo. The four young adults were arrested and taken to Dubbo police station. A police search of the vehicle revealed evidence of alcohol and a stash of rocks which, based on the offenders' previous behaviour, officers at the scene believe may have been gathered for use as possible weapons or projectiles against police. The driver of the car is facing a range of charges relating to traffic offences including driving in a manner dangerous, driving whilst disqualified and failing to stop. Police enquiries are continuing regarding the behaviour of the three female passengers.
