It was a day which saw Dubbo CYMS trounce Forbes 56-0 at Victoria Park Dubbo, and one of the most memorable days in the club's history.
Gordon scored two tries that day and kicked six conversions to be one of the standouts for CYMS, who won their first premiership in eleven years.
Gordon went on to play Country that year in what was a great year for him personally.
Conversations will certainly revolve around that year when friends, colleagues and teammates gather on Saturday for a night in Gordon's honour.
Gordon has not been in the best of health recently after being diagnosed with cancer last year.
The special night has been organised by his best mate Greg Cross and will be held at the Garden Hotel, Dubbo.
Cross has been lifelong friends with Gordon, and they played most of their football together.
Proceedings will start at 6pm and run until about 11pm, with entry $10, which covers lucky door prizes, a band, entertainment and nibblies.
"We thought it would be good just to have a special night for a bloke who is really known as a great competitor and great friend," Cross said.
"We are expecting quite a big crowd and we are going to run an auction.
"We have football items up for auction and someone has shown great generosity in donating a signed and framed Wallaby jersey."
Other items that will be up for auction include a State of Origin jersey and a signed Waratah's football.
As well as going on to play with Macquarie, Gilgandra and Mendooran, Gordon also trialled with Eastern Suburbs in NSW Rugby League under football immortal Arthur Beetson.
"Arthur was going to come up for the night but had prior commitments, but Marty boarded with Arthur and they got to know each other well," Cross said.
"Marty also played for Group IX and Western Division and was a great player."
Player and coach Steve Hall will also be present on Saturday night, he was captain-coach of CYMS in 1986.
"We really went from club to club together, me with my coaching and playing and he as fullback," Hall said.
"I know there are a lot of blokes keen to see him and I have kept in regular contact with him, he really is a champion bloke.
"We went though Group XI and Western Division together, it was a really great time for both of us."
As well as gaining great friends through his time in rugby league, Gordon is also well known for his work in juvenile justice, police and correctional services.
Businesses to make a donation to Gordon's night include; The Westside Hotel, Gearin' Up, Coopers Tavern, Castlereagh Hotel, Athlete's Foot, Myer, The Garden Hotel, Railway Hotel, Sportscene, The Wests Tigers Rugby League Club, NSW Country Rugby League and the Australian Rugby League.
