Former Test captain Mark Taylor and the charismatic Merv Hughes will head the Australian Legends team that will take on a Dubbo Eleven to be captained by John Colwell with Rod Morrison his deputy.
Both Colwell and Morrison lost parents to cancer late last year which sparked an idea to raise funds for the base hospital's oncology unit.
South Dubbo Cricket Club team-mate Andrew Grant and his wife Rachael put up their hands to help organise the cricket match and fundraising dinner to be held the evening before the game on Wednesday, February 15.
"Sadly John lost his mother to cancer last year, while Rod lost his father which sparked the idea to do something to help those less fortunate than ourselves," Andrew Grant said.
"The response has been magnificent and all being well we hope to raise about $10,000 - anymore will be a bonus.
"Ticket sales for the dinner on the Wednesday night went very well and have been sold out. We thank those individuals and businesses who have paid $65 a ticket or $600 for a table of 10 to attend.
"With some auctions, interviews and good company, the dinner will undoubtedly be the sporting highlight of the year.
"Through the great support of Merv Hughes and his involvement with OneSteel, we have been able to pull together a team of cricket names who have played the game at all levels.
"These players have been quick to throw their support behind the fundraising concept and get involved while here in Dubbo.
"Our local group will be showing the visitors around this great city of ours with the Western Plains Zoo a priority, along with a game of golf on the Thursday morning before the cricket game.
"The whole program should be great fun and we urge everyone to come down to the game on the Thursday night, see and meet these former greats and in the main help our cancer fund."
The Australian Legends squad will comprise Merv Hughes, Mark Taylor, Colin Miller, Damien Fleming, Paul Reifel, Rodney Hogg, Shane Lee, Phil Emery, Brendan Julian, Graeme Hughes and Lee Campbell.
"Cricket followers would have trouble working out what credentials Lee Campbell has as a player but if you watch Celebrity Overhaul then you may know him as the fitness guru in the popular television program," Andrew Grant said.
"We also have to find a playing twelfth man for the Legends and that will be done as an auction item at the dinner.
"Already there has been some interest with local businessman, councillor and cricket-tragic Mathew Dickerson keen to put his hand into his pocket and take on the role if successful."
The Dubbo Eleven is an interesting one with former Group 11 rugby league player of the year Glenn Spinks from Cobar "a talented cricketer in his own right'' included, along with Dubbo's New South Wales Under-17 spinner Ryan Medley.
Other team members are John Colwell, Andrew Grant, Rod Morrison, Glenn Armstrong, Wayne Munro, Michael Kempston, Ben Day, Aaron Etcell and Jason Green.
Besides the cricket, there will be plenty happening at the ground with prizes for crowd catches of sixes hit by the players and a raffle prize of a beautifully made cubbyhouse donated by Stuart Astley and the team at Astley's Plumbing and Hardware.
The Dubbo Kangaroos will be operating canteens and bars but the grandstand will be a dry area with no alcohol permitted and security patrols.
There will also be a Bundaberg Rum tent with the fabulous Bundy Girls behind the counter.
Former top cricket and rugby league player now sports presenter Graeme Hughes will broadcast his Radio 2SM sports show Talkin Sport from the ground between 4pm and 7pm with interviews from local sports personalities.
Of special interest will be a marquee housing Sommers Cricket Equipment and its master cricket bat maker John Rennie.
"We believe we have a great night of entertainment, all we want is a super crowd to support the concept," Andrew Grant said.
