A group of budding young entrepreneurs from Walgett has won a prestigious award at the Young Achievement Australia (YAA) National Awards in Sydney this week. After scooping the pool at the NSW awards ceremony the group of secondary school students was awarded the Amcor Australiasia National Community Value Award for their endeavours in their business "Yaama Maliyaa". Yaama Maliyaa, the first indigenous Central West Orana group to win a national YAA award, produced a unique range of Koori-themed emu-egg jewellery, as well as giftware using locally sourced "bush" items. According to Carley Johns, national sponsorship manager for Young Achievement Australia, the students won the award for their concentrated community based marketing planning as well as their identification and commitment to purchasing and sourcing goods locally. "Their ability to utilise the local community to derive company and product awareness was remarkable and resulted in excellent product sales for Yaama Maliyaa," she said. Ms Johns said the students started the 24 week buiness skills program as a group of reserved individuals with no business experience. "Before long, they bonded together with common aims and goals to exceed all expectations. "Yaama Maliyaa's approach to business is complimentary to ours. David Brookes, sponsoring company Amcor's public affairs general manager, was effusive in his praise for the young business dynamos. "Both our companies strive to support and build capacity in the local communities in which we operate. "We are delighted to present our award to such a deserving group of young Australians," he said.
