Dubbo's Mulvey Cup challenge is also in good shape after a 2-1 victory over Bathurst yesterday.
In yesterday's sporting events, Dubbo won tennis and basketball while Bathurst dominated in netball and hockey.
Dubbo sports master Craig May said today's competitions in athletics, rugby league, softball and soccer would all be tight and the overall result probably won't be decided until after boys' soccer.
"We're pretty pleased with our first day's performance but it will be another close day of competition on Tuesday," May said.
"Our boys' athletics team looks very good but it will be very close for the girls. Unfortunately Christine Beach broke her toe in the hockey match yesterday and she was in our athletics team
"Softball will be tight call as both schools don't normally play the game so there are a few unanswered questions in this event.
"There has been very little between our two soccer teams over the past three years and it should be just as interesting this time.
"The availability of Bathurst's Western Division and Country under-18 halfback Tim Holman is a major concern for our rugby league side and the way we handle him could mean the difference."
Dubbo's biggest advantage came in tennis yesterday when Allan Armstrong, Sarah Costello and Kristin Schneider stood out in their 14 sets to 2 victory.
That performance earned Dubbo 87.5 Astley Cup points to 12.5.
The netball was a thrilling game throughout with Bathurst ending up in front 43-41 and earned 51 points to 49.
Bathurst led narrowly at each break - 13-7, 25-15 and 30-28 in a game that could have gone either way. Dubbo's best were Natasha Cox in defence, Amy Gillett (centre) and Lauren Fox in goal.
Boys' basketball has always been a strong game for Bathurst and after leading 53-20 at half time drew away for a 112-55 victory and earned 67-33 points.
Dubbo was best served by Liam Morrow, Mitch Ipkendanz and Elloit Goard.
Dubbo always struggles to match it with Bathurst in hockey and the local girls scored a 3-0 victory and as a result earned 80 Astley Cup points to 20.
Samantha Lincoln in goal was one of Dubbo's best.
The triangular competition between Dubbo Senior College, Bathurst and Orange high schools has been contested since 1923 with each school involved in one home and away game each year.
Dubbo's competition at home will be against Orange High on June 24 to 25 while Orange host Bathurst on June 17 to 18.
Orange High is the current Astley Cup holder after overcoming Dubbo in 2003.
