Free waste disposal at Wellington

RESIDENTS in the Wellington Council area who want to clean their houses and yards in the lead-up to Christmas will be able to dispose of their rubbish for free during December.

Council will host a series of fee-free days at its waste depots during the month.

Free entry to the facilities will take place at the Wellington Waste Transfer Station and Mumbil Waste Depot on Saturday, December 1, and the Euchareena, Geurie, Stuart Town and Elong Elong waste depots on Sunday, December 2.

Wellington Council planning, environmental and community services director Darren Honnery said the free entry would be restricted to one large trailer size load (one cubic metre by three cubic metres) per resident.

"This is the ideal time for residents to have a bit of a clean-out prior to Christmas and to tidy up their homes and yards," Mr Honnery said.

"On these days we will also be putting a focus on recycling and educating people on how to best manage their waste by sorting it into recycling piles that are kept separate from general waste."

He advised recyclables should be sorted into categories; glass containers, aluminium and steel drink containers, plastic, scrap steel and uncontaminated grass clippings (not mixed with tree loppings).

"By recycling waste each time you go to these facilities, you can save money on entry fees as well as reduce the amount of waste going into landfills," Mr Honnery said.
