Stunned residents in the normally quiet streets of the suburbs saw the drama unfold and looked on as the owner of the vehicle gave chase.
Inspector Keith Ridley said police have spoken to witnesses and are calling on anyone who saw the incident to contact them.
"At about ten past eleven on Tuesday the owner of a Hino tray back truck was preparing his truck for deliveries when several people have jumped into the vehicle and allegedly attempted to steal it," he said.
"The owner tried to prevent the theft, and in the process, he was injured.
"The vehicle was allegedly stolen from Davidson Drive then it was driven to Leichhardt Street, Dubbo where one of the persons who allegedly stole the vehicle has either jumped out or been ejected from the vehicle."
Inspector Ridley said the vehicle came to rest in the front yard of a Leichhardt Street resident's house.
"The person who was driving the vehicle after it was allegedly stolen escaped the scene and is still wanted by police," Inspector Ridley said.
"The passenger who jumped out of the vehicle is undergoing assessment for injuries and is assisting the police with our inquiries.
