He came in like a wrecking ball, dismissing Ben Wheeler (2), Jacob Hill (2), Nathan Munro (2) and Glenn Shepherd (3) to have Rugby in strife at 4-14.

Fellow opening bowler Trent Smith also contributed to the partnership, claiming the wickets of Roland O’Connor and Peter Karydis in quick succession to finish with figures of 2-14.

Aiden Bennewith (17) put up a fight in the middle order but once he was seen off – the Skinner brothers combining with Mat catching from Steve’s bowling – Rugby’s resistance seemed over.

Adam Richards (10) and Kye Matterson (5) managed two boundaries for the tail but Newtown bundled them all out for 69 in 31 overs.

Enter Wayne Dunlop, who carried his bat all the way through Rugby’s innings to finish 41 not out.

“My job pretty much is to hold the batting together and bat as long as I can,” he said.

“The bowlers really put us in a really good position and Mat and Trent bowled really well, we had them six wickets down at drinks.”

But it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Tigers as Dan Holland (0), Dwayne Kent (6), Doug Potter (10), Mitch Russo (2), Jesse Spang (4) and Tom Barber (0) all failed to get starts.

Jacob Hill claimed Kent, Potter, Russo and Spang for impressive figures of 4-29 off his eight overs, while Adrian Carey (1-27) got the better of Dan Holland.

But Dunlop held up his end, combining with Kent for a 36-run partnership, and delivered Newtown the victory.

As at Victoria Park No 1 and No 3, a bit of grass left on the wicket made the games a great battle between bat and ball.

“I thought it was pretty much a day for the seamers and Jacob Hill bowled really well for Rugby and the wicket was really conducive to seam bowling as well for a change, which was really good for the bowlers,” Dunlop said.

“It had a bit of life in it for the quicks and sometimes it doesn’t hurt to have a day like that, where the ball dominates the bat and the seamers had a bit of a day out which is good.

“It offered some encouragement for the bowlers but if you batted well there was some runs to be scored as well.”

The bonus point win moves Newtown to top of the ladder after RSL-Colts defeated CYMS on Saturday.

“That bonus point is going to help us at the end of the year,” Dunlop said.

“We want to finish in first place and there’s not going to be much between us, Colts and CYMS.

“It’s all going to come down to that at the end of the day.”
