University of NSW (UNSW) medical students spent this week in Dubbo to help teach local children about the importance of healthy ears and what they can do to prevent hearing issues.

Through a partnership with Dubbo’s Hear Our Heart Ear Bus, the 25 UNSW students spent the week meeting with Dubbo West students at the Preschool, Primary School and Infants site.
UNSW have been visiting Dubbo for approximately three years to meet with local students to impart good, lifelong ear health messages.

Approximately forty Year 2 students at Dubbo West Infants gained valuable insight into the importance of blowing their noses when the UNSW students visited them on Tuesday.
The trip to Dubbo had been an amazing experience for UNSW medical student Tiyasha Sabud, who said they have all learnt so much from the Hear Our Heart Ear Bus team.
Some of the programs the medical students focused on included audiology, ear testing and Teddy Bear Hospital.
“A lot of the time hearing problems goes undiagnosed which impacts on development,” she said.
UNSW medical student Leonard Mah agreed with Ms Sabud and said ear health issues, such as grommets, was so easily prevented with proper nose blowing.
“Children may be misdiagnosed or be seen as misbehaving students, when actually they have a hearing problem,” he said.
