National Walk Safely to School Day is May, 18 and encourages all primary school students to walk and commute safely to school.
For the past four years a group of Buninyong students have been doing just that, thanks to the program ‘The Walking Bus’.
The idea of ‘The Walking Bus’ came from principal Anne van Dartel, who wanted to achieve a higher attendance rate.
The students, together with a dedicated duo of Student Learning Support Officer’s (SLSO), have not only been getting to school on time but have built a great relationship with their peers and teachers.
Every day at 7:45am the SLSO’s, Alex Richardson-Bell and Andrew Taylor, pick up Buninyong students from Apollo Estate and walk with them to the School.
The students get to school in time to also attend the breakfast Club.
Mr Taylor said it was great to have that support with the community.
“And it encourages students to get to school earlier, so we have a higher rate of earlier attendance,” he said.
“In winter we get about 20 to 25 students and in the warmer months it’s approximately 30.”
