The Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave began back in 1998 and for 20 years it is one of Australia’s biggest fundraising events.
People of all ages shave, colour or wax, cut pony tails, banish beards and trim top knots.
As well as the shave, Dubbo Kumiai-Ryu Martial Arts System held a bake sale, a barbecue, a dress up day, and a chuppa chup sale in the lead up to the event which all went towards the Leukaemia Foundation.
Dojo instructor Shidoin Daniel Anderson said they raised a total of $2300.
“We’ve been holding a Worlds Greatest Shave for about three or four years,” he said.
“I think doing the Worlds Greatest Shave is important.. it helps get the word out….”
Shidoin Anderson said it was also a nice social outing for the children, their parents and family.
“We had about 60 participants and another 50 or so mums, dads and extended family,” he said.
“The kids band together and work out who their friends are.. it’s a social day for them too.”
The ninjas held the Worlds Greatest Shave fundraiser on the same day ad their annual dojo competition.
Shidoin Anderson said they will “definitely be holding a Worlds Greatest Shave next year.”
According to the World’s Greatest Shave website more than 60,000 Australians are living with blood cancer or related disorders, and the equivalent of one person every 41 minutes is diagnosed.
Although research is improving survival, sadly an Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours. They claim more lives than breast cancer and melanoma.
When we checked the Worlds Greatest Shave website on Thursday, March 22, a total of $12,219,072 had been raised across the nation.
New South Wales was leading the state fundraising board with $3,966,663
