The Dubbo Gold Club division one pennants team travelled to Cowra on Sunday to try and stop Mudgee making it three straight Central West Golf District Golf Association titles.
But it wasn’t to be as Mudgee scored a resounding victory.
“Mudgee was just the better side in the end so all congratulations to them,” Dubbo captain Michael Wherritt said.
“That’s their third title in a row so it’s no fluke. They’re good at what they do and we were chasing our tail all day.”
Mat Brown downed Mudgee veteran John Osborn in the decider, coming back from 4 down at one stage to win on the final hole but that was Dubbo’s sole win.
Mudgee champion Mark Hale defeated James Gleeson while Josh Campbell defeated Matt Gleeson and Matt Stanley downed Wherritt.
Dubbo’s Nick Coggan was all square with Andrew Best heading into the final hole when that match was called off, with Mudgee guaranteed the overall win.
“I’m proud of all the boys and they all did their best so that’s all you can ask,” Wherritt said, before speaking about his clubs achievements this season.
“Having all four sides in the semi finals is something really good and we got into the final. Some things could have gone our way but Mudgee was too strong.
“We had some juniors who were just off the mark this year but they should be in next year and just in our team we had ages ranging from 19 to 58.
“Nick (Coggan) is 19 and even though he was all square on Sunday he says he remain unbeaten for the season. He was definitely our MVP and played really well each week.”
The windy conditions at Cowra on Sunday didn’t make life easy for players, Wherritt saying it wasn’t until roughly the 12th hole when he got a real hold on things.
But Mudgee, led by the class of Hale, played the better golf to seal a historic third straight division one title.
The first of the three wins broke a 108-year drought for the Mudgee club.
“We didn’t win one for 108 years but if we stick together we might win the next 108,” Hale said.
“You never know. The boys are so united and it’s a really good squad.
“I can’t see anyone not playing next year.”
Despite the loss, Wherritt said he his side enjoyed one of its best bus trips home with no mention of any regrets.
