Showing true grit after losing their centre Tina Gavin through a broken leg in the first half, the Castlereagh senior team kept its finals hopes alive with a hard fought 18-6 win over Woodbridge Cup.
A 14-point haul from Castlereagh five-eighth Tori Canham set up the win. She scored two tries and booted three goals to move into top spot on the point scorers’ list for the season, this being despite missing one game through injury.
Canham was one of the many stars in the gutsy win with some other standout performances being handed in by fullback Stephanie Bowling, who was backing up from the under 18s game, along with hard-working captain and hooker Sam Turnbull, and also halfback Zoe Harland who had a monumental game in both attack and defence.
The team gets to play its second home game this Saturday when it welcomes Group 11 to Coonabarabran.
A win in front of what should be a bumper crowd will give the Castlereagh side a shot at finishing in the top two of the Championship and subsequently a berth in the final.
Currently both Group 11 and Castlereagh sit on four competition points and a highly entertaining affair is anticipated.
The Castlereagh under 18s team finally broke through for its first win in the competition after being highly competitive in all the outings to date. In a result due after so much determination and commitment, the Castlereagh side defeated Woodbridge Cup 24-20.
