Superintendent Peter McKenna addressed the media on Monday in the wake of a brawl in the Apollo Estate on Sunday morning which saw two people charged with offensive behaviour.
Officers were initially outnumbered but returned with strengthened resources to ensure calm was restored to the area.
The call for respect comes as police also search for a Narromine man who they allege assaulted a female officer last Thursday.
“I just want to get a message out to the community that there have been too many instances of late where people have taken it upon themselves to abuse, threaten or assault police in certain circumstances,” Supt McKenna said.
“I can’t make it any clearer this won’t be tolerated in this district. If people want to behave in that manner they need to understand there will be consequences, and those consequences are likely to be that you’ll find yourself in some handcuffs, in the back of a police truck and brought back to the station.
“Yesterday police were called to an incident in Dubbo, which resulted in a number of people in that street engaging in antisocial behaviour.
“Two people have been charged as a result with off behaviour and that related with how they interacted with police.”
The brawl wasn’t the only case where police were caught in a difficult situation in recent days.
“Again on the weekend there was a situation where one of my officers was assaulted outside a licensed premises, and that person was swiftly dealt with.
“That will continue to happen, and I make no apologies for taking this firm line.”
