Miles Franklin’s Lost Diary
When an old battered suitcase passed down through three generations of Miles Franklin’s extended family was opened in 2015, the discovery of a small, red pocket diary filled with the spidery writing of one of Australia’s most loved authors was cause for considerable excitement. A prolific writer, Miles kept diaries all her life. This diary, her last, was written in 1954 with her final entry just days before her death and was thought to be lost until its discovery just three years ago.

Miles Franklin was an Australian author best known for My Brilliant Career, published when she was just 22 years old. Franklin went on to have a successful career as a writer, editor, feminist activist, and an enduring advocate of Australian literature. Today, the Miles Franklin Literary Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the county.
Join Richard Neville, Mitchell Librarian from the State Library of New South Wales, and Dubbo’s own Kim V Goldsmith, a descendant of Miles Franklin, on Thursday 8 March from 6pm and hear the incredible story behind the discovery of Miles Franklin’s long lost diary. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to get up close and personal with a piece of Australian history owned by one of the country’s literary greats. Sit, Knit, and Relax
Sit’n’Knit meets on the first Saturday of each month from 11am-1pm and is for all ages and skill levels. Accomplished knitters can come along and share ideas while those who have never picked up a set of knitting needles can discover tips and tricks from more experienced knitting superstars. Everyone is welcome to come along, bring a friend and try a new craft. Sit’n’Knit will be held at the library this Saturday, March 3. No bookings are required and everyone is welcome!
