RSPCA shelters across Australia are holding the Clear the Shelters campaign, bringing the cost of adoption down to $29. The animals will still be desexed, microchipped and vaccinated.
RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil said the aim was to get pets out of shelters and into their new homes as quickly as possible.
“The reduced adoption fee doesn’t come near covering the costs of preparing an animal for adoption, so we can’t offer these low prices all the time – but we also don’t want money to be the only obstacle to bringing a pet into a happy and loving home,” said Ms Neil.
“Importantly, our data has shown us that the price of acquiring an animal has no influence on the long-term success of adoption and welfare outcomes.”
The Clear the Shelter campaign will be held from Friday to Sunday at most RSPCA shelters. Last year it broke records for the number of adoptions.
