Hits including Pretty Woman, Only the Lonely and Crying will be performed by John in ‘YOU GOT IT! A Salute to Roy Orbison’, the only show of its kind in the world as it is officially endorsed and presented by Roy‘s son, Wesley Orbison.
Originally from Australia, John started singing at four-years-old and even sung for the Queen of England when she toured the country for the bicentenary.
“After school I lived in L.A for a while,” John said.
It seems like John’s life has been a whirlwind of touring, performing and rubbing shoulders with the whose who of rock and roll.
John lived in Nashville for a few years after that and even wrote a song for country music star Blake Shelton. He also wrote a number one hit song in Europe. After John performed Roy’s hit song ‘Crying’ at a function, a special guest just so happened to be there.
“Wesley was in the audience.. he loved it (the Crying performance) and we became good friends,” John said.
“It’s a shame because people don’t remember a lot about Roy Orbison so we decided to record an album… I got together with his old band then I did a show in Las Vegas.”
That show ‘YOU GOT IT! A Salute to Roy Orbison’, is very special, John said, as it has Wesley talking over clips.
“He’s talking about his dad that no-one knows about. It’s very special,” John said.
Another special thing about the show for John is that he is such a huge fan of Roy’s himself.
“I did love Roy growing up. And this show is literally a tribute to him.. not an impersonation. It’s a salute,” he said.
“I’ll be singing as me. I don’t pretend to be anyone. I’ll just be singing his songs to remind the world how great he was.”
John is in Australia now preparing for the tour and said he was looking forward to coming back out to Dubbo, a place where he only just recently visited.
“Dubbo is one of the most friendliest towns I’ve been too,” he said.
John played in Dubbo in October last year and said he and his family even got to enjoy some of the local attractions.
“It was my son’s birthday so we took him to the Zoo.. and this year we plan on coming up to the City a few days before (the performance) because my daughter wants to go to the Zoo again,” he laughed.
“The Dubbo show will be exactly the same as it was in Las Vegas, but without the big orchestra and dancers…,” he said.
The show will be held at the DRTCC on Friday, April 6.
