The RSL Aquatic and Health Club has taken the “precautionary measure” as it brings in structural engineers to take a look.
The 25-metre heated pool’s closure “until further notice” impacts more than a 1000 patrons, among whom are 900 children in learn-to-swim classes.
A possible issue with the roof had come to light as the organisation looked at doing upgrades, and applying for a grant for that purpose, RSL Club human resources manager Rebecca Zaia told the Daily Liberal.
The club had brought in an external provider to assess the pool area for what to do for a grant application.
“They were the ones that alerted us to possible issues with the roof,” Ms Zaia said.
She said the club had taken it on itself to act, closing the pool and bringing in structural engineers.
“We have put solar panels on the roof, and perhaps that has something to do with it,” she said.
“But we need to get the inspectors, structural engineers to come in and have a look and give us the answers.
“So we’ve done it as a precautionary measure, until we get the answers.”
The length of the closure is not yet known.
“There’s meetings going on as we speak, so as soon as we get the answers we need, obviously we’ll move as quickly as we can with what we need to do and we’ll move forward with that,” Ms Zaia said.
The club has been contacting pool users.
“We have 900 learn-to-swim children over there, it’s huge,” Ms Zaia said.
“Plus people with disabilities, we’ve got Zumba, water aerobics, inner clubs like the swimming club, the Dubbo Ducks, all the inner clubs, so well over a thousand users of the pool.
“We understand that it has had an impact.”
The club said it was working hard to try to accommodate everyone and was seeking any avenue to help each of its patrons.
The gym and all other club facilities remain open and are running as normal.
