After day one action in the second last round of the regular season, it is no clearer what the exact make-up of the top three will be.
CYMS are on track for the minor premiership after taking day one honours against third-placed RSL-Colts while Macquarie and Newtown, currently in fourth and fifth respectively, also performed well.
At Lady Cutler 2, CYMS produced yet another strong effort with the ball to dismiss the defending premiers for 113.
Colts lost 6/38 at one stage during the middle stages as Cougars seamers James ‘Busta’ Nelson (3/36 from 11), Sam Knaggs (2/24 from 11) and Callan Braithwaite (2/19 from 7.4) all did a job and were ably supported by Paddy Nelson (2/18 off six).
Nathan Finlay top-scored for Colts with 26 and while he was one of five players to make double figures, no one could go on and make the big score required.
CYMS finished at 3/70 in reply, just 43 behind. Luke Ensor (28) fell to Geoff Wheeler (1/13) just before stumps, joining Connor Watts (0) and Heath Larance (19) in the sheds.
Nathan Hawke (14 not out) and Danusha Egodawatte (0 not out) will resume the innings next week.
Newtown has kept its hopes alive after controlling day one of its clash with Rugby at Lady Cutler 4.
Going into the round six points off third the Tigers needed a win and after finishing day one at 4/209 they are every chance of doing that.
Jakob Short top-scored for the Tigers with an impressive 82 not out but he was able to build on the foundation set by openers Adam Davis (67) and Lachlan Reid (51).
Greg Kerr then chimed in with a late 41 not out to help set an imposing total for Rugby to chase next week.
Adam Richards took 1/46 from 12 and Glenn Shepherd finished with 1/49 from 13.
Macquarie will need a strong performance with the bat next week to stay in touch with the top three while South Dubbo is nine wickets away from strengthening its hold on second spot.
The Blues dismissed Souths for 172 on Saturday but then had to bat for three overs.
They didn’t get through unscathed as Oscar Robinson knocked over Joe Haylock (0).
Earlier in the day, Justin Gavin made the most of his recall to second grade by taking 4/18 from 12 overs while Harry Brennan, opening the bowling with his spin, took 2/37 from 18 overs.
Ed Knight top-scored for South Dubbo with 42 while Greg Rummans made 32 and Andrew Cusack was not out 28.
Brennan (4 not out) and Sam Henry (4 not out) resume the chase next week.
