The Hornets, heading into this round in second spot, fought back after a slow start last week and finished the day in a position of control.
After dismissing the Cougars for 179, Souths reached 1/117 at stumps with Corey McDean (52 not out) and Mat Finlay (16 not out) at the crease and the likes of captain Mitch Bower, Henry Railz, Will Lindsay, Adam Wells and Scott Tucker still in the sheds they are well-placed to pile on the runs.
And with 75 overs the day the Hornets will be looking at the possibility of an outright win.
There has been only one outright this season and that came in round one when Rugby downed CYMS with ease.
The Cougars welcome back Ben O’Donnell on Saturday but will be without Brock Larance as he is playing at the National Indigenous Cricket Championships in Alice Springs.
Rugby will be without Ben Patterson for the same reason in its run chase against Macquarie.
Macquarie posted 228 last week and will be out to defend that against a Rugby lineup still featuring NSW Country player Jordan Moran, captain Nathan Munro and James O’Brien.
First-placed Rugby will be keen to score victory in order to at least maintain it’s current seven-point buffer to South Dubbo on the ladder.
Play starts 1pm.
