The Black Tigers went into the weekend’s round of RSL-Kelly Cup action seven points behind leaders RSL-Colts Red and seemed destined to fall further off the pace following Rootes’ demolition job.
Rootes claimed 5/17 from eight overs and helped roll Newtown Black for just 136 after Brett Wrigley (43) had earlier got them off to a strong start.
The Rugby Blue run chase never got going and when Craig Pettit (4/10) came into the attack he soon had Newtown Black on the way to victory.
The Tigers finished at 7/92 after the 40 overs.
A Jamie Hamilton century proved not enough for Newtown Gold in a final-over thriller against Rugby Red.
Hamilton dominated his side’s innings and made 103 not out as the Gold Tigers posted 8/222, with Garry Goodman’s 2/19 off eight the best figures.
Dale Smith then made 88 in the run chase as Rugby Blue went on to reach the imposing target with just two balls to spare.
Smith’s effort was the highlight while Kieran Rosenbaum (3 not out) hit the winning runs off Hamilton (3/19).
A strong effort with the bat helped CYMS White keep its finals hopes alive against Macquarie White.
Macquarie White posted 5/179 from its 40 overs, with Braye Stevenson’s fighting 59 the best knock.
Shawn Townsend and Sam Taylor took two wickets each for a Cougars side which went on to win by five wickets.
Peter Hyde (44) and youngster Zac Williams (43) led the way in the chase.
Rajat Rai claimed 4/8 from six overs to help South Dubbo beat RSL-Colts White.
Mick Davis made 63 for Colts but Rai helped dismiss the men in red for just 132.
Ben Matthews then hit 49 not out to help Souths score a comfortable seven-wicket victory.
RSL-Colts Red suffered defeat to Newtown White on Saturday but remains on top of the ladder.
Newtown White, led by Tom Skinner’s 65, posted 183 at John McGrath 2 while Colts’ Irfan Sagri took 2/16 off eight.
Garry Ashford opened and top-scored for Colts with 37 in the run chase but no other player dug in.
Dean Lake claimed 3/25 as the White Tigers continued their fine form by dismissing the leaders for 167.
CYMS Green moved further clear of the bottom after a four-wicket win over Macquarie Blue.
Mat Sharp took 4/14 as Macquarie was rolled for 123, with Brad Roberts’ 30 the best.
Joe Jackson then belted 49 not out to help his side score a comfortable win.
