The temperature is sweltering across Dubbo, but for Robyn Hicks, it’s the perfect time to be working on a blanket.

Dubbo was forecast to hit 43 degrees on Monday, which would have been the highest temperature recorded so far in January. However by 3pm it was sitting just under 40, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Ms Hicks, who owns Yummy Yarn and Co, said for her the heat meant it was time to get her crochet hook out.
“For me it’s an absolute no-brainer. If it’s 43 degrees outside I’m going to be sitting inside in the cool crocheting something. The tennis is on the cricket is on, I can happily sit and crochet something and engage with the TV at the same time,” she said.
“Some people don’t do anything over spring or summer which confuses me because it’s a year-long hobby. You don’t have to do anything big which sits on your lap, especially with crochet you can work on the motifs.”
Socks had proven to be especially popular during Spring and Summer, Ms Hicks said, in preparation for the cooler weather.
The admitted crochet addict said while the craft has previously been seen as an “old person’s hobby”, the younger generations had been embracing it and handmade items had become more appreciated. The slow movement was also seeing a desire for people to sit down and knit, Ms Hicks said.
“But sales are definitely down over January because Dubbo just leaves Dubbo and goes to the coast,” she said.
For those not loving the heat, the temperature is expected to decline throughout the rest of the week.
Tuesday is forecast to reach 41 degrees, while Wednesday will likely hit 40. Thursday and Friday are both expected to top 37, while the weekend will be slightly cooler with a maximum of 35 forecast for both days.
The end of the week may bring rain with small showers expected on Friday and Saturday.
“The hot weather doesn’t matter to me. It doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold. Actually being hot is probably better because it’s too hot to do housework so you have to sit and crochet,” Ms Hicks said.
