It is the first time since 1985 that the “essential infrastructure” has been revamped.
The pump station, on the corner of Darling and Erskine streets, was first commissioned in 1928. It pumps sewage to the Dubbo Sewage Treatment Plant.
Dubbo Regional Council’s manager of water supply and sewerage Stephen Carter said the project that began in August 2015 addressed problems at the pump station.
“The upgrade addressed problems of insufficient pumping capacity, lack of emergency overflow storage, lack of odour control and monitoring and insufficient emergency protections,” he said.
“Council will now consider options to improve the amenity of the area with better fencing or appropriate landscaping to improve the overall visual appeal of this highly visible site.”
On January 10 the council closed Darling Street to southbound traffic because of the project.
The change to traffic conditions was expected to last until January 24.
But this week Mr Carter advised that the southbound lane had been reopened earlier than expected.
“Council advised that Darling Street, between Erskine and Talbragar Street, would be closed to undertake planned sewer main construction work during January,” he said.
“However, the works have since been completed and the road is open to all traffic.”
