Currently, there is no direct public transport service from Tamworth to Dubbo.
Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Roads, Maritime and Transport Kevin Anderson said on Thursday that the trial was part of a wider push to improve transport services in regional NSW.
“We are always looking at better connectivity and transport options for regional areas,” Mr. Anderson said.
According to a statement by NSW Trainlink, the proposed service would be a daily service that will travel from Tamworth through Gunnedah, Coonabarabran and Gilgandra before arriving in Dubbo.
The statement said a coach will depart Tamworth at 9.20am and arrive in Dubbo at 1.35pm. The coach will then make a return journey to Tamworth, departing at 2.15pm from the Dubbo Railway Station to arrive in Tamworth at 6.20pm.
Mr. Anderson pointed out the bus service would also link Tamworth with services to Broken Hill, Bourke, Brewarrina and Lightning Ridge.
“Dubbo could open up the west for people coming from Tamworth,” he said.
The service would also create a connection from Tamworth to Orange, Bathurst and Lithgow via the Dubbo XPT.
Mr Anderson said the service is expected to begin operation in the near future, with the start date for the trial coach link being in the final stages of deliberation.
Mr. Anderson also stressed the service would not come at the cost of any other existing public transport connections in regional NSW.
“I was very clear to the Transport Minister that this was an additional service,” Mr. Anderson said. “It will not be at the expense of anything else.”
NSW Trainlink will hold a community information session on the trial service at the Dubbo Farmer’s Markets on Saturday January 20 from 8am to 12pm.
A survey is also being conducted by Transport NSW to gauge public opinion on the new services.
