And the gifts are already arriving for Police Cat (PC) Splashe, who’s melted hearts from his station at Bourke.
He’s been rocking a new elf suit that was a gift in the countdown to Christmas, when he’s been rostered on to duty.
On December 25 he’ll share in some feasting with the human colleagues who have welcomed him into their lives this year.
“The officers on Christmas Day are going to have a cook up, so no doubt there’ll be some Christmas ham, he’ll love that,” Senior Constable Belinda Hurst said.
The sleek black feline’s fortunes have changed since he turned up at the station as a young and hungry cat at the start of the year.
Local officers chipped in to pay for Splashe’s food, vet bills, bed and toys.
The moggy rose has risen to fame, featuring on the Darling River Local Area Command’s Facebook page and in the Daily Liberal.
It’s been a busy year but Senior Constable Hurst said PC Splashe had really settled in.
“He’s loving life,” she said.
Splashe was recently treated to a new collar and toys to celebrate what’s believed to be his birthday month.

The summers of Bourke are his challenge.
“His antics have been a bit on the slow side lately due to the hot weather, being a black cat in 45-plus degrees isn't too great for the little guy,” Senior Constable Hurst said.
“He has been seeking refuge in the air conditioning wherever he can 'helping out' staff and welcoming visitors to the station.
“He keeps on top of his station cat duties, like catching mice, 'patrolling' the station roof, and being an all round loveable cat to anyone who wants to give him attention.”
