About 400 Dubbo students found out their Higher School Certificate Results on Thursday, followed by the ATARs on Friday.
At St John’s College, there were at least eight students who had ATARs above 90.
Ainsley Carlow received 96.85. After a “ridiculous” amount of anticipation at seeing the results, Ms Carlow said it was nice to finally have the weight off her shoulders.
“I'm just really happy that I got rewarded for my hard work because I have been consistently trying this whole year. There's nothing worse than going into something knowing you haven't put your best effort in,” Ms Carlow said.
Having spent her fair share of time at the orthodontist, dentistry is on the books for Ms Carlow.
Her advice for the upcoming HSC students is to give it their all.
“I think as long as they try their best and put in as much effort as they want and need to than the ATAR is only a number. It's more about your own marks and how you felt you've gone. You don't want to be disappointed with your effort,” she said.
John Porter, who had an ATAR of 91.85, had slightly different advice.
“Don't listen to anyone. Everyone will try and tell you what to do in life but there's one person in the world who knows you the best and that's yourself,” he said.
Despite the high mark, Mr Porter is forgoing university for the next two years to travel. After moving to the United Kingdom he plans to backpack around Europe.
He then plans to study at the Universtiy of Melbourne as a mature aged student and become the greatest director in the world.
“Call me dumb or naive, it's probably a combination of both, but essentially for a long time there was only one thing I understood an that's moving image... During my HSC I produced and shot a short film instead of studying for my exams,” Mr Porter said.
Emma Stimpson said she plans to study psychology.
“It's always interested me and my mum really wants me to do it, it interests her as well. I haven’t decided on a uni yet,” she said.
Ms Stimpson, who had an ATAR of 94.55, said her family and friends had been calling all day to tell her they were proud.
The ATAR far surpassed her expectations, Ms Stimpson said. She had a predicted mark of 89.
