The two-kilometre strip of the highway, the main thoroughfare from Melbourne to Brisbane, is located 14km from the city was identified for upgrade due to deterioration and its rough surface.
Countless trucks and other heavy vehicles use the section of road each and every day throughout the year, and the section has been identified as being in need of repair.
A total of $3.5 million has been allocated by the State government, and Member for Dubbo Troy Grant said it is hoped the remedial work will help provide a stronger, longer lasting and safer road.
“Works will start with tree clearing next week, and from January 8 the road surface will be removed and replaced, drainage will be upgraded and shoulders widened,” Mr Grant said.
“Work will be carried out Monday to Saturday from 7am to 6pm and is expected to be completed by late April, weather permitting.
“Motorists should plan their trip, allow extra travel time and follow the direction of traffic control and all signs, including reduced speed limits.”
Mr Grant said the rest area located within the two kilometre upgrade will also be closed from January until the completion of the work, but there are alternatives available.
“The Brocklehurst Rest Area is open and is located six kilometres south of the work site.
“Roads and Maritime thanks motorists for their patience during this important road upgrade work.”
