Twelve months after winning the title on the hallowed turf, the Outlaws once again got over the Wagga Sloggers in the semi-final.
In a low-scoring contest, Greg Buckley’s men overcame a shaky start with the bat to post a competitive total of 9/127 from their 20 overs.
Buckley himself top scored with 27, while 22 from fellow Englishman Darrel Williams helped give the Outlaws something to bowl at.
In a match where momentum ebbed and flowed, the Sloggers came out with an intent to try and plunder early runs, but a pair of early wickets to Ben Strachan and a classy stumping from Jason Ryan off the bowling of Henry Railz ensured wickets kept tumbling.
And when spin was introduced, Orana really took a grip on the contest.
Buckley bowled his four overs for 17 runs, Wes Giddings tied up an end, Williams chimed in with three wickets and right at the death Mitch Bower was able to give up just seven runs from two overs at a time where Wagga needed to go at nine an over.
“I was pretty proud of the side, to be honest,” Ryan said after the match.
“A lot of us have been here but we’ve got three kids in this side, we’re missing Jordan Moran and we didn’t play any pool games.
“I thought we probably left 20 or 30 runs out there but we bowled and fielded really well and it was a big effort to get away with that win.
“Our spinners were a big advantage last year and they were again in this game. We’ve got about six spinners we can call on and we didn’t have to go to either Brock or ‘Rabs’ (Anthony Heraghty).”
Ryan praised the composure of his young trio – Brock Larance, Henry Railz and Tom Atlee – and said he was happy with their efforts.
“I could sense they were a bit nervous but they did their job. I just said to Brock before he opened that the game of cricket is the same whether it’s here or at Dubbo. They bowl the ball, you hit the ball.”
The final against Newcastle is scheduled for 6.30pm on Sunday.
