Defending RSL-Whitney Cup champions RSL-Colts scored their second win of the season, beating Newtown by eight wickets at No.2 Oval.
Englishman Darrel Williams led the way for Colts, taking 5-40 off his nine overs before backing up and making an unbeaten 70 with the willow.
Newtown skipper Dan French won the toss and elected to bat, and would have been disappointed as Dan Holland (8) and Kale Bock (0) departed early to the bowling of Ben Semmler.
Wayne Dunlop and Doug Potter were able to steady the ship, putting on a 56-run partnership that ended when Dunlop was bowled by Williams for 30.
Three balls later Williams trapped Dwayne Kent LBW, and that over would prove vital in the course of the contest.
Williams got on a roll and finished with five wickets as the last eight Newtown batsmen put on just 85 runs and they were bowled out for 163.
Not surprisingly, Williams was the best of the Colts bowlers and finished with 5-40 off his nine overs, which was backed up by a sensational spell from Wes Giddings, who took 1-8 off nine overs, with three maidens.
Former Australian Country merit squad member Tim Cox also picked up a wicket in his first match of the 2017/18 season.
Giddings and Williams, who both played despite being members of the Orana Outlaws side that was in action at the SCG on Sunday, would figure prominently with the bat as well.
Sent out to open, they wasted no time in the chase and from early on the intent was obvious.
The first five overs went for 27 as both men found the boundaries early.
That trend continued for more than half of the innings as both men showed their class.
They brought up their 100-run partnership in just the 21st over and took the score to 133 before Giddings was caught off the bowling of Mitch Russo for a hard-hitting 68.
Chris Morton came to the crease and made 12 before he was cleaned up by Russo.
Paul Hulthen came to the crease, and along with Williams was able to see the red and whites over the line in just the 31st over.
Williams finished unbeaten on 70 as Colts were able to pick up a bonus point win they will hope can kick start their season.
Russo was the only Newtown bowler to get among the wickets, and he ultimately finished with figures of 2-19 off 4.2 overs
The win moves them off the bottom of the Whitney Cup ladder, and keeps them in the hunt for a spot at making the 2017/18 finals.
They now sit on 21 points, six points off Newtown who sit in fourth place, with one round of matches remaining before the Christmas break.
Realistically they are not going to be able to afford any kind of slip-up between now and the finals, but as a side accustomed to making and winning big matches, the self-belief within the club will mean they don’t consider themselves out of the race by any stretch.
Newtown will face Rugby this Saturday, while Colts will do battle with fellow strugglers CYMS.
After this Saturday’s round of matches, Dubbo cricket will go into recess and will resume on Saturday, January 13.
