It is alleged the man began burning rubbish on a property in Wuuluman, near Wellington, on Tuesday, January 10 during a high-fire danger period.
Police allege the man attempted to extinguish the fire; however, his attempts were unsuccessful.
The following day, Wednesday, January 11, a fire took hold and burned about 2675ha and destroyed a Wuuluman Rural Fire Service truck, along with kilometres of fencing.
The fire was eventually brought under control.
Following extensive investigations by officers from Orana Local Area Command, the man has been charged with cause or set fire to the property of another, or Crown.
He is due to appear in Wellington Local Court on January 16, 2018.
