2017 was an exciting and busy year for Orana Heights Public School (OHPS). The students were involved in a wide variety of activities ranging from sporting opportunities and achievements to spelling bees and their Science Day.
The year started with celebrations for Mother’s Day, as Kindergarten hosted a craft and morning tea for their mum’s and nan’s. Everyone enjoyed themselves and went home with a gift that was made together.
Father’s Day was celebrated with a kite making and flying session. The weather was perfect with loads of fun had by all.
At OHPS we value the contribution made to education by all family members and pride ourselves on everyone feeling welcome and being part of the school community. This is evident through the huge crowds attending Grandparents Day.
The students look forward to these occasions and showcasing our school and achievements. The positive vibe of the day and comments made by visitors demonstrate the success of the celebration and how valued our senior members of the school community feel.
Science Day proved to be a huge success as students and teachers alike researched activities and carried out experiments. From rainbow bubbles and volcanoes to parachutes and rocket making - a lot was learnt and ignited plenty of creative thinking.
A proud moment for OHPS was when Sophia Nuguid represented the school at the Regional Spelling Bee. She wowed everyone with her vocabulary knowledge and spelling prowess and selected to represent the region at the State Finals of the Premier’s Spelling Bee.
Another student to shine, this time in sports was Xanthe Chatfield, who won the gold medal in shot put at the state championships. Xanthe is on her way to Nationals in Adelaide and we wish her all the best.
We also had four relay teams that attended the State Championships along with the senior boys’ soccer team who made it to the state’s top eight.
Orana Heights has a strong welfare system which is driven by our ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning’ (PBL) values and expectations. All students and staff are guided by these, and demonstrate them on a daily basis both in the classroom and the playground.

Students are acknowledged for all their hard work and positive interactions by having a PBL reward afternoon. One of the whole school rewards this year was a tabloid sport afternoon that was enjoyed by all.
The ten elected students who made up the student representative council were extremely active in the school community this year. Activities included leading sporting activities for Kindergarten students during their lunch breaks, and they also helped organise and lend a hand during Kindergarten Orientation.
The SRC hosted many fundraising activities, such as ‘Hear our Heart’ Red Day and Beanie 4 Brain Cancer Day. They encouraged the school to feel ‘Everyone Belongs’ on Harmony Day and modelled their dancing skills at the whole school dances. Well done to everyone for a fantastic year.
