The two sides have played some outstanding RSL-Whitney Cup matches in recent times, most notably last season’s four-run grand final which the men in red won by four runs.
The two sides do battle again on Saturday and Colts captain Greg Buckley is backing the big game players in his side to deliver.
“It’s always a good game and will be again,” Buckley said ahead of the contest at No. 1 Oval.
“I think it’s going to come down to those basics of fielding and bowling well. I don’t think it’s going to be a 260-270 (runs) day. It will probably closer to 200 and it might just take a bit of magic.
“We have some players in our side who can change a game with a century or a five-fa and more often that not there’s someone who steps up in the big games.
“We’re backing ourselves and going in with confidence.”
The fact Colts, the defending premiers and competition powerhouse, sit fifth with just one win is of no concern to Buckley.
He pointed to the fact his side has been without a host of players regularly so far this season due to representative commitments while Brad Cox, a key cog in the middle order, is out injured.
Cox has an MRI on his shoulder on December 11 and if it is revealed he needs surgery he would likely miss the rest of the season.
“We had a good win two games back and once we get used to winning we’ll be hard to beat,” Buckley added.
A player Buckley is looking forward to watching on Saturday is English colleague and leg-spinner Darrel Williams.
Williams has been a hit since arriving in Dubbo, forcing his way into the Western Zone side, and his captain is keen to see him take on some of the competition’s best batsmen.
“Darrel’s (bowling) is a bit different and his leg spin is something not a lot are used to,” Buckley said.
“With Mitch Bower and others for Souths liking to play their shots he’ll be key for us.
“If we can tie him down at the other end then Darrel can be a wicket-taker so I’m looking forward to that battle.”
Will Wolter is expected to feature at the top of the order for Souths, having settled back into life in Dubbo while Bower, Will Lindsay, Henry Railz and Adam Wells headline the powerful batting lineup.
Souths heads into the match in fourth spot, having also been affected by various representative commitments this season.
Captain Bower, much like Buckley, has said he’s not worried about his side’s start to the season and a victory on Saturday could see the Hornets move into third spot on the ladder.
Saturday’s match at No. 1 Oval starts at 1pm.
