It’s fair to say things are pretty busy for the Dubbo Kangaroos as they look to prepare for the 2018 Blowes Clothing Cup.
At the club’s recent annual general meeting, Graeme Board was returned as president, with Gerald Webster and Vince Gordon his vice-presidents.
Mark Bartimote will fill the role of secretary, Ned Williams is registrar and discussions are ongoing for the treasurer’s role.
With a new committee in place, attention now turns to the coaching side of things and Board admits the Roos are a bit behind the eight-ball.
“We’re looking to bring in a new coaching structure but we haven’t had a good chance to put that in place as yet,” he said.
“Ideally you’d like to have these things in place by now but there’s a process you have to follow. We’ve been in some discussions and those discussions will be ongoing but as things stand we’re not in a position to name any coaches.
“We’ve got a new committee in place, and while it’s sad to lose people that have been involved it’s good to have new blood and new ideas coming in.”
Next season looms as a landmark year for central west rugby, with new competition structures in place and Matt Tink replacing Peter Veenstra as chief executive officer.
And the Roos are supportive of the moves, even if there are still some unknowns to be sorted out.
“I don’t think anyone knows for sure how these new tiers are going to work, but something had to be done and they’ve tried to address it,” Board said.
“From our perspective it was good when we had the chance to play the Rhinos, and good when we had the chance to play Narromine. But what I think will happen across the competitions is there will be more consistent competitive matches and less of those blowout scores we were getting.
“We’re currently looking at what to do with third grade, because we don’t want a culture where blokes are training and not going to away games, or not getting consistent footy through forfeits.
“But we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. There’s no rush there.”
