A local trio might have missed out in Monday’s “cut throat” Australian Open qualifiers but the fact young players were attempting to make the country’s biggest tournament is proof of Dubbo’s ability to develop talent.

That’s the feeling of Dubbo Golf Club professional Craig Mears after seeing Jones Comerford, Lachie Jones and John Swan fall short earlier this week.
Qualifiers were held at Ryde-Parramatta, Liverpool and Carnarvon with the final 10 spots for this week’s $2.5 million Australian Open.
Comerford and Jones finished at +3 and +5 respectively at Ryde-Liverpool while Swan finished at +9 at Liverpool.
“Jones (Comerford) has obviously had a great year and he made the state team and Lachie made a state development squad but all this just shows Dubbo is producing some really good golfers, like we have done in the past,” Mears said.
“We’ve got some good players and it’s great to see them go down and try and qualify for the biggest tournament in Australia.”
With more than 250 players teeing off in the qualifiers it was always going to be a difficult task but Mears said it wouldn’t have been a shock to see one of the trio get through.
Lindsay Wilson is one player from Dubbo who will definitely tee off at The Australian Golf Club.
Wilson earned automatic qualification for his efforts on the Australasian Tour last season and described the chance to play in the Open as “a dream” earlier this week.
