Dubbo and District Cricket Association president Jeff Shanks admits he had some concerns about Saturday’s RSL-Whitney Cup match between Macquarie and CYMS going on as long as it did but has backed umpire Matt Knudsen.

The No. 1 Oval pitch was left in a muddy state when Knudsen called the match, Macquarie having bowled CYMS out for 149 before making 0/4 in reply.
“It was a funny one. At the time I did (have concerns),” Shanks said, the match being played in constant light rain.
“But I spoke to (head of umpires) Doug Sandry afterwards and he said it’s up to the umpire and games can be played in the rain.
“The umpire doesn’t have to call it off unless he thinks it’s unsafe.”

Shanks stated that rule changed in 2013 and before then matches wouldn’t start or go on if it was raining.
With Macquarie bowlers coming off shortened run-ups there was no danger of them slipping over on Saturday but Knudsen decided the CYMS bowlers were unable to bowl without risking injury.
Only four matches, across all three grades, started on Saturday and of those just one was completed. That was an RSL-Kelly Cup third grade contest between CYMS White and Macquarie White.
“The weather is playing a bit of havoc but at the same time the area needs it,” Shanks added, this being the second weekend this season which has been affected by rain.
“It’s definitely affecting the cricket but it’s still early in the season so I think people are a bit more sympathetic and understanding.”
Despite the abandoned games, Shanks said he has been pleased with the start of the season in Dubbo.
“It’s going really well so far. There’s a lot of sides doing better than some people expected and some others not doing as well as they would like and that will make it great later in the season.
“That’s across all three grades too.”
