Free expert workshop to help Dubbo companies avoid security risks

Charles Sturt University (CSU) is coaching businesses in the Central West on cyber security threats and mitigation.

Businesses are invited to learn how to protect themselves against cyber attacks at the free expert events being run by CSU with the support of the NSW Government.

Member for Dubbo Troy Grant said on Thursday a “Cyber Security for SMEs” event will be held in Dubbo on Tuesday, November 14.

"The growth of digital technology in business has contributed to a growing risk of cyber security events or cybercrime," Mr Grant said.

"Recent research by the Office of the NSW Small Business Commissioner showed that about one in three small to medium-sized businesses in NSW have been victims of cybercrime.

"I encourage business owners to take advantage of these free workshops to learn how to better protect their businesses from online crime."

Professor Mark Morrison from CSU’s CenWest Innovate said the events will coach businesses on cyber security threats and mitigation.

"The workshops will offer expert advice from panelists including William Ulyate from Content Security, Cyber Security Advisors, and Dr Peter White who is manager research and development at the Department of Finance Services and Innovation Spatial Services and an adjunct lecturer at CSU.

"The panelists will coach businesses on cyber threats and issues, how to conduct risk assessments, how to mitigate cyber security issues, and how to apply the Australian Security Directorate’s Essential 8 guidelines.”

Mr Grant said CSU is being supported through the NSW Government's Boosting Business Innovation Program which is providing $18 million to the state’s 11 universities and CSIRO – including $1.5 million to CSU – to help businesses innovate.

The Dubbo event runs from 7am to 10am at CSU’s Dubbo Campus.
