The establishment of a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility in Dubbo is one of many measures council is investigating in an effort to cut social injustice in the city.
LALC chairman Stephen Ryan said the land council had been making property available for Indigenous healing centres to help convicted drug offenders.
“We fully support council’s initiatives here and we’ll assist in any way that we can,” Mr Ryan said.
However, Mr Ryan said he also wanted a detox centre established.
“You can’t get to a rehabilitation centre without detoxing first and it’s proven that detoxing at home doesn’t work,” the chairman said.
A rehabilitation and detox centre would have a significant impact on the crime rate in Dubbo, Mr Ryan said.
He said he was in the process of organising a meeting with councillor Stephen Lawrence and mayor Ben Shields about the rehabilitation centre and the land he was offering.
