Hosted at St John’s College, two competitions were run this year Commercial Cookery (back of house) and Food and Beverage (front of house).
Students came from all over the western region, including St Johns College, Warren, Tottenham, Trangie, Trundle, Peak Hill, Mudgee, Bathurst, Yeoval and Narromine. The budding chefs prepared a three course meal, under the watchful eye of expert culinary judges.
A total of 18 students took part in the Zone 1 regional competition, 11 in commercial cooking and 7 in food and beverage.
Commercial cooking judges included Melissa Baxter, Ronnie Campbell and Ben Kirkness, while Sue Greer, Janette Elliot and Kristy Milligan assessed the food and beverage students. The students prepared a three-course meal to 21 guests which included their family, friends and teachers.
Department of Education’s Liz Fullerton, who co-ordinated the Zone 1 competition said it was great experience for the students.
St Johns College TAS Coordinator Lee O'Leary said the school had been involved in the competition for many years and have always been supported.
Ms O’Leary said having the fine caliber of judges, which included chefs, would help the students.
“It’s great to have the judges, who are already in the industry, coming in. It’s really important for the students and helps expand on their skills,” she said.
